Skyhook in Action

Locr

Geo-tagging is a popular way to catalog and add context to shared photos. locr, a photo-sharing and geo-tagging community, integrated Wi-Fi Positioning from Skyhook Wireless to overcome the device and accuracy limitations of GPS-based geo-tagging.

Before Wi-Fi Positioning from Skyhook Wireless, locr could only support devices with GPS hardware. locr was missing out on the tens of millions of mobile handsets that contain both built-in Wi-Fi and cameras, but not GPS. With WPS, locr immediately started geo-tagging photos taken on these previously untapped devices.

Poor GPS performance also limited the accuracy of locr's geo-tags. Integrating WPS improved the accuracy and availability of location information for locr users, especially for photos taken in urban areas and indoors. And unlike GPS, WPS can fix location in under one second. Now locr photographers can instantly shoot and tag their photos, without waiting up to a full two minutes for GPS to determine their location.
