Trapster
Trapster is a location-aware speed trap detection application for mobile phones. Trapster users geo-tag speed trap locations with their mobile devices. The system can then alert drivers as they approach speed trap locations, helping them avoid expensive speeding tickets. Tenereillo, Inc., the developers of Trapster, turned to Skyhook Wireless to provide reliable positioning accuracy.
To consistently warn drivers as they near traps, Trapster requires precise location determination across entire metropolitan areas. Tenereillo integrated Skyhook Wireless' Wi-Fi Positioning System with GPS for excellent coverage in both urban areas where WPS dramatically outperforms GPS, and in rural areas where GPS works best.
Like many developers pre-launch, Tenereillo was working on the Trapster application with a limited budget and resources. Their key concern was developing a great application and developing a large user base. Once Trapster launched with Wi-Fi Positioning, Skyhook availed its public relations resources to Tenereillo. As a result, the Trapster story was picked up by the Associated Press and spread to the USA Today, Fox Business, CNN, and other popular news outlets worldwide.
Trapster is great example of an innovative location based service. It's also a case study in Skyhook's support of application developers working with the WPS.
